The National Library of New Zealand sought to enhance Papers Past by incorporating digital Te Reo Māori texts from its Books in Māori collection. OCULAR was engaged to assess the user experience, focusing on how Māori content is accessed, understood, and honoured within the platform.

Understanding the Challenge
The Ngā Tānga Reo Māori texts are more than just historical documents—they are taonga. In the physical world, kawa (protocols) guide access and handling of such materials. Our role was to consult with experts, researchers, and whānau to understand how these principles should be reflected in the digital space.

Key Recommendations
Our research findings were delivered as a report to the National Library, with core recommendations including:
- Contextual Framing – Using whakataukī to introduce users to the Ngā Tānga Reo Māori collection and emphasize the significance of its taonga.
- Bilingual Interface – Implementing Te Reo Māori as an interface language to improve accessibility.
- Enhanced Discoverability – Ensuring Books in Māori content is as visible and accessible as other materials.
- Education Potential – Positioning Papers Past as a valuable tool for Te Reo Māori language learning.

Ongoing Collaboration
Following the success of this phase, OCULAR was engaged for the second and third stages of work. This involved a full UI overhaul of Papers Past, including the implementation of key recommendations from our research. The National Library also opted to introduce a Te Reo Māori interface for the Ngā Tānga Reo Māori collection, and we collaborated on custom Māori illustrations to further enhance the experience.
By blending UX research, cultural insight, and strategic design, OCULAR helped shape a more inclusive and respectful digital space for Māori language and history.
