Department of Conservation Predator Free 2050: Let Nature Go Wild

All Projects, Video

From concept to delivery, OCULAR produced a playful AD that transforms an everyday moment into a vivid daydream of a predator-free future.

The challenge - increase awareness and create excitement around NZ's ambitious goal of a predator free Aotearoa by 2050. Reframing the narrative away from predators to focus on celebrating our native species, flora and fauna. At the centre: a young woman, inspired by a simple act of conservation, imagines a world where native species flourish around her.

That world comes alive through performance, featuring dancers from the Royal New Zealand Ballet embodying native creatures in a choreographed, expressive “wild” takeover.

Shot on location at Zealandia, the film grounds the fantasy in a real-world example of what’s possible.

The result is a tonal shift from urgency to optimism, replacing fear with momentum, and education with emotion.

Behind the scenes

To extend the life of the campaign and bring audiences closer to the craft, we captured a series of behind-the-scenes reels, revealing the physicality, playfulness, and precision behind the filming

From being mic’d up to on-set moments in the bush, the BTS content showcased the collaboration between dancers, crew, and environment, reinforcing the idea that this “wild” world was built by real people, in a real place.
